The Staples Center was built within a very compressed time schedule in order to complete the project prior to the start of the professional basketball and hockey seasons. The main function of this sports arena is to provide a playing venue for three professional sports teams. Timing was critical. Universe Corporation was selected as the panel fabricator for this project because of their willingness to commit to the scheduling demands and to stay within the subcontractor’s budget limitations. This was further complicated by a very complex and evolving design for this building.
The circular and elliptical design also included a 10 degree tilt and seismic considerations as additional intricacies to incorporate into the panel system designs. In spite of ongoing design development on a variety of issues by the architectural firm, the Universe project team worked continuously to adjust their design development to these changes and, most importantly, keep the panel design and fabrication on schedule.
The Universe 2000 Rout and Return Wet Sealed system provides a great deal of flexibility in design and installation. The non-progressive nature of the Universe 2000 attachment system allows the installer to start his panel erection where ever the substrate is ready without concerns for a need to follow a specific progression. New framing extrusions were developed to create the 2” and 12” wide horizontal reveals within the standard 2000 system to meet the design concepts of the architectural team. Four different colors, Pure White, Champagne Metallic, Platinum and Slate Metallic, totaling 125,000 SF where utilized to support the overall intent.
